Artist to Watch: Langston Hunter

As you know, I’m constantly searching for fresh new music to write about. So, when I came across Carousel by twenty-four year old Langston Hunter, I knew I needed to interview and feature him.

Currently residing in Houston, TX, Hunter grew up taking music classes in school as well as choir, which peaked his curiosity. After taking a break from it, he then collaborated with close friends, collectively called YATU, (“You Are The Universe“). Some of Hunter’s influeces are Pharrell, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Tyler, the Creator, Donald Glover, and Stevie Wonder, just to name a few, as well as family and friends.

“….[I want to inspire] people to be themselves and to push myself to push the envelop of music.”

My favorite track from his EP, Carousel, is ‘Tracy’s Car’! Hunter made ‘Tracy’s Car’ at the end of 2016 when he was at a point in his life where he felt alone. So, he channeled that energy into this song. It is a trippy melodic track that makes you feel like you’re daydreaming but with lyrics that make you feel the aching loneliness he was going through. Listen below!

“I hope that she pick up the phone/ Because I’m feeling all alone/ But that’s a feeling that we all know”

‘Things That Make Me Smile’ (TTMMS) is another track that really caught my attention. It’s an appreciation shoutout to his supporters. This song was written for the people that are close to him.

“This is for everybody that stuck around when I was in need/ This is for every time I was low and I fell down to my knees”

‘On&On’ is a little deeper than the rest of the other songs; not as light and quirky. This track talks about some of Hunter’s friends that are serving life and other friends that sold drugs. It talks about the never ending cycle of getting out and continuing on the same track that landed them behind bars the first time. They can’t escape the cycle. And then it goes On&On.

Try again is what I say at the end of the day/ Hard times, I hope it don’t ever happen again

“Each song on the EP is a small fragment that is an amalgamation of the whole, which is me. There’s songs about being lonely and songs about wanting to be alone. I think that’s the human experience. We don’t always want company around, but no one wants to feel lonely…. which is the concept of the EP.”
